A.I.’s Effects on the Development of Teenagers’ Critical Thinking Skills – Olivia Crossman & Brinn Fitzsimmons ’28

The long awaited development of artificial intelligence has played a significant role in the world, primarily on the minds of teens. AI is the programming of human intelligence into computers to provide quick and accessible information. With the use of data and algorithms, it is able to adapt to each user’s preferences and is also constantly learning. AI provides both quick and effective information however, this comes at the cost of lower accuracy rates. The interference of AI with critical thinking has become both a concern and an enabler. Critical thinking is a key skill in the cognitive development of teens, as it allows the brain to function at a higher level. This skill is not only significant to the development of the brain but is also an important life skill. Critical thinking allows humans to think outside of the box and develop their own opinions and views. Without critical thinking, humans would be unable to develop a sufficient understanding of simple, important topics. This skill also allows individuals to form their own opinions based on the analysis and synthesis of information provided, instead of believing all information given to be factual. The advancement of AI has both positive and negative effects on the development of teens’ critical thinking skills, as issues of overreliance, passive learning, and inaccuracy combine with the promotion of curiosity, effective learning alternatives, and easily accessible information to create today’s version of critical thinking.

 In terms of learning alternatives, AI has the ability to provide alternate explanations to adapt to a student’s learning style, which they may not have been able to get during their class periods. During class, it becomes difficult for teachers to provide one-on-one explanations and adapt to every student’s learning preferences. Therefore, with the effective and controlled use of AI, students can deepen their understanding of topics through these alternate explanations and adaptation to learning preferences. Moreover, feedback can be provided by the students to enhance their understanding. Feedback allows students to dig deeper into concepts, which may not have been covered in class. It allows for an increase in curiosity, ultimately leading to further cognitive development.

AI has also become a quick resource for research and brainstorming. It has become a resource that serves as an assistance to students in the beginning stages of projects, essays, and other large assessments. It provides students with a place to begin when unsure of how to go about beginning an essay or studying for a difficult assessment, such as a DBQ. With assistance on the beginning stages of an assignment, students are set up to better understand the concept being covered and ultimately increase their critical thinking rates. Understanding possible inaccuracies of AI’s output and engaging in this type of response can also enable students to apply their knowledge and dig deeper into cognitive reasoning. The acknowledgement of mistakes in AI’s output allows students to exercise critical thinking in a new way. Overall, this newly developed tool serves as both an aid to learning and an aid to the exploration of critical thinking in a technological setting.

As artificial intelligence becomes more common in education, concerns about its impact on critical thinking are also rising. One of the most significant issues is overreliance. Many teenagers nowadays may begin to depend on AI tools to complete assignments instead of working through problems on their own. While AI can provide convenient and quick answers, it can also reduce opportunities for students to practice reasoning, analysis, and problem-solving skills that are essential for intellectual development.

Another concern is the decline in independent research. Rather than exploring multiple sources to form their own conclusions, teenagers may accept AI-generated responses without questioning their accuracy. This can weaken their ability to evaluate information and even assess the credibility of sources. As a result, they may struggle to think deeply or form well-supported opinions.

Additionally, AI is not always accurate. It can sometimes generate incorrect or misleading information. Without applying critical thinking skills, teenagers may not recognize their errors and could accept false information as true. This makes it even more important for students to question and verify that AI provides correct information rather than blindly trusting it.

The use of AI can also promote passive learning. When students copy answers instead of actively engaging with the material, they are less likely to fully understand the concepts. Critical thinking develops through active participation, such as asking questions, making connections, and analyzing ideas more deeply. Without this engagement, learning can become superficial, and intellectual growth is limited.  

The use of artificial intelligence is very likely to remain a major part of teenagers’ educational experiences. It offers many benefits, such as quick access to information and new ways to explore complex topics. However, its impact on the development of critical thinking skills depends on how it is used. To ensure positive outcomes, having a balanced approach is necessary. AI should be used more as a support tool rather than a replacement for independent thinking. Teachers and parents also play an important role in guiding teenagers to use AI responsibly by encouraging them to verify information, not fully depend on AI, and engage more deeply with their learning.

Ultimately, AI has the potential to enhance education, but only if teenagers continue to develop the critical thinking skills needed to question, analyze, and understand the world around them, with the assistance of AI, but not full reliance on it.
