Why James and The Giant Peach: The Musical?- Zoe Boggier ’23

Earlier this school year, Oak Knoll continued its tradition of announcing the musical at general homeroom. Agatha Cabrera and Grace Ritter, both key performers in last year’s production, made a special video to not just tell, but show OKS the selection. The 2023 Spring Musical will be… James and the Giant Peach!

This production was adapted from the famed book by British novelist, poet, and screenwriter Roald Dahl. His works are sharply funny and creative, and Dahl is renowned for pieces like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. JATGP follows the story of James Trotter, an orphan under the care of two cruel aunts. One day, he is persuaded by a strange man called Ladahlord to create a magic potion to alter his circumstances. When the plan goes wrong, a giant peach and insects are created, and when the fruit is cut from its tree, they end up going on a spectacular adventure. The musical is more of an ensemble-focused one, which is a tremendous reason for its being chosen. As Ms. Bodollo and Ms. Gotanco are new to the Oak Knoll community this year, it makes the most sense to gauge the strengths of each individual performer while they get to know them personally. JATGP is whimsical, different, and witty.

Performing arts veterans Mary Kate Bolster, Sarah Maher, Jenna Thauer, and Courtney Coyle are sure to shine in this production. Alex Huegel, who’s already been hugely involved in the Arts at Oak Knoll, is also a girl to watch. If you’re looking to make friends and try something different, ask Ms. Bodollo or Ms. G about auditioning or assisting as tech/setup crewmembers! If not, be sure to support your peers by keeping an eye out for February shows and other exciting updates.
