Don’t Worry Darling Review- Kiley Reape ‘24

SPOILERS*****

Olivia Wilde’s newest film, Don’t Worry Darling, has been one of the most anticipated movies of September 2022. Starring famous singer Harry Styles and actress Florence Pugh, there was much hype leading up to the release. On September 22, 2022, this thriller was released to the public, and many viewers have mixed feelings about director Olivia Wilde’s new endeavor. Taking place in California in the late 1950s, Don’t Worry Darling follows Jack and his wife Alice in the idealized and utopian community called Victory, an experimental town that houses the men of the Victory Project and their families. The Victory Project, led by a man named Frank (Chris Pine) and his wife Shelley (Gemma Chan), is shown as a highly secretive military plan where the men work in exchange for housing in the Victory communes. Life in Victory is shown as uniform and perfect, as the men work while the wives live perfect domesticated lives. A rigid social order is established as the men rule over the women. Furthermore, there is a strong sense of uniformity as the men go to work every day without fail and the women spend their days cleaning and shopping. Everyone enjoys their lives of luxury and symmetry in this seemingly perfect community, until Alice Chambers begins challenging the norms and realizes some things aren’t as great as they seem. When her friend Margaret (Kiki Layne) is killed for investigating this community, Alice’s world begins to crack and she begins questioning things that don’t quite make sense. In a dramatic and creepy plot twist, Alice discovers that Victory is really a simulation created by Frank, in which the husbands trap their wives in this perfect community. In the real world, Jack kidnaps his girlfriend Alice and transports her into this world in order to live a happier life. While the men are supposedly working for the Victory Project, they actually leave the simulation to work and take care of their wives’ bodies. None of the wives know they are being held captive, except Alice’s friend Bunny (Olivia Wilde), who eventually helps Alice kill Jack and escape the simulation in a suspenseful and chaotic ending as the world falls apart. This film is thrilling from the start to the end, and many questions remain unanswered, all up to the interpretation of the audience. Florence Pugh’s acting in this movie is incredible and Olivia Wilde’s cinematography is breathtaking. Whether you enjoy thrillers, or you are diehard Harry Styles fan, I would totally recommend watching this movie!
