Elizabeth Eck ’22 and Tara McTague ’20
Elizabeth Eck: Quarantine is the perfect time to read new books and revisit some of your old favorites! During this time, I’ve been reading some of the classics. I am enjoying The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton, which visits the time of high society in New York and the forbidden love between a divorcee and a newlywed. I also recommend jumping back into some of your old favorite childhood books. I’m rereading the Harry Potter series, and then planning to watch all the movies with my family!
Tara McTague: Reading has been a great escape for me during this time. First, I finished The American by Henry James, a classic which follows Christopher Newman’s journey as a wealthy American in France. Next, I read Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, which is a quick and heartrending read. Hurston is a prominent writer from the Harlem Renaissance, and this novel is a beautiful love story. I then decided to read Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, which is a sharp contrast in both setting and mood. I believe this classic is important to read, but it is not the most uplifting. Finally, for people who are interested in a more modern novel, I would recommend Anne Tyler’s The Accidental Tourist, which portrays the life of a man and a woman who cope with the loss of their young son. Overall, now that we all have more free time, I would highly recommend any of these books for both escapism and a chance to get off of screens when we are not Zooming.
