As Summer 2021 approaches, many of us begin to think about how we are going to spend our time off. Volunteering is a rewarding way of connecting with one’s community while providing a sense of purpose during a time when you’re not being slammed with schoolwork. It is also worth noting that volunteering has been linked to increases in dopamine, which, in turn, raises happiness levels. Here are some local summer opportunities accessible to teens.
If you’re a skilled communicator… try YCAT (Youth Climate Action Team). Partnered with the US Environmental Protection Agency, this youth-run organization raises awareness about climate change. They seek out private companies and compose overviews that show how attainable fixes can be made to better the planet. They collect donations to go to original research, data production, and STEM climate leadership programs. YCAT is seeking members of both the social media and operations teams; these roles are generally filled by people who thrive socially. There are also summer camp opportunities!
If you have a love of English… try helping the Connection-run English language courses. Young tutors are also welcome to assist newcomers to the US learn English. This is an essential skill that will truly help immigrants, so it is particularly rewarding. Additionally, many of these meetings are done over Zoom, making it pretty low-commitment.
If you’re an animal lover… try working with the NJ Animal Alliance. This group is always in need of dog walkers, volunteers to assist during pet adoption days, and even families who can provide foster care. If you’re an artist, they also seek creative artists and writers for special projects, many of which are extremely low-commitment. Volunteer applications can be found on their website.
Take some time off this summer, but if you’re able, take a look at one of these opportunities to give back!
