Senior Year: The One Where We Quarantained

Mary Kate Conniff ’20

High school and college seniors all over the world are all experiencing the same repercussions from the coronavirus pandemic. Proms, graduations, internships, performances, spring sports are all being canceled or postponed. Classes and even AP exams have transitioned to electronic platforms. However, the seniors at Oak Knoll are keeping their spirits high through virtual activities in an effort to recreate their senior year as much as possible. For example, the senior center is a place where the senior class commonly gathers to socialize. In an attempt to recreate this space, there have been senior center Zooms during lunch periods purely for socializing.

In addition, spring sports such as lacrosse and track have created fun workouts and activities to make up for their seasons that have been cancelled due to the COVID-19. For example, the track team has held various zoom sessions and virtual track meets. The lacrosse team also held a step competition against cross-town rival Summit in lieu of their county final game.

On another note, many seniors had to adjust their capstone projects as well. Some seniors are creating children’s books, a cookbook, or instructing Yoga via Zoom. Nevertheless, the seniors remain hopeful for a Baccalaureate Mass and a graduation ceremony in late July. This pandemic will be something our grandkids and history books talk about one day. For now, the seniors at Oak Knoll strive to stay united as best they can during these difficult times.
