Despite the challenges of COVID-19, winter sports are in full swing! Basketball, Ice Hockey, Fencing, Track, and Swimming are mid- season and they all prove that Oak Knoll is a serious contender. Beginning January 11th, basketball has been practicing and has played 3 games to date. Going up against New Providence, Westfield, and Roselle Catholic, they currently hold a record of 2-3. The three captains are Greta Criqui (‘21), Hannah Bolster (‘21), and Caroline Maher (‘21). The team’s Senior Day was February 13th, honoring the five talented Oak Knoll seniors. Ice Hockey took off on December 14th, and have had four games, two of which were against Madison and Morristown-Beard. Their record is 2-2, and their captains are seniors Paige Kehoe (‘21), Katie Lawler (‘21), and Gabby Volpe (‘21). Swimming started February 1st, and the team has not yet competed in a meet. The captains of the team are Sara Rogers (‘21), Claire Adelhelm (‘21), and Cara Minter (‘21). A big change this season is instead of being side by side in the pool, swimmers will time their individual race and compare times with their opponent at the end. Senior captain Sara Rogers says, “Despite all these differences, I feel extremely fortunate and lucky to be able to compete and swim with the Oak Knoll swim team as a senior and captain!”
Fencing began on January 11th as well, and their current record is 0-1. The captains are seniors Grace McCaghey (‘21) and Leticia Sefia (‘21), and their Senior Day was February 5th. The team is welcoming three new members who have no previous experience, and they are proving themselves with hard work and dedication to the sport. McCaghey (‘21) says, “We have been practicing non-stop and we believe we will finish this season strong.” Winter Track began February 1st, and the team is led by captains Maura Ferrigno (‘21) and Lizzie Athaide (‘21). Track has not yet competed, but their season is sure to be competitive and full of talent. Due to COVID restrictions, the volleyball team’s normal fall season was moved to spring, and they are expected to start in early March. Players have been preparing for an exciting season for months and are looking forward to getting on the court.
