Movie Review of 2023 – Madeleine McKinney ’26

As the new year begins, we look back on 2023. In the evolving landscape of cinema and Hollywood, the past year brought forth many new movies that captured the attention and imagination of viewers globally. The phenomenon of Barbenheimer had people rooting for the charm and feminist messages of Barbie versus the exhilarating true story of Oppenheimer. We even saw a book come to life through The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and explored more about the backstory of the character we all know, Willy Wonka. Although there was variety in the films, each movie imprinted a unique place in our hearts as well as in cinematic tapestry.

Throughout 2023, according to The Cinema Foundation, there was an increase of moviegoers by 14%. Advertising in Hollywood has been extremely effective recently with over 2 billion dollars spent. New up-and-coming actors have also been making their mark on film in 2023, such as Jacob Elordi who starred in Saltburn and Priscilla, and Timothee Chalamet in Wonka. Barbie is considered by some to be a groundbreaking film with its gender equality message and reversing the stereotypes around the doll. The movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, also made a record-making profit of a total of 1.3 billion dollars, according to CBS News.

Overall, 2023 was a remarkable year for cinema and put forth a diverse range of films that went along to different genres and preferences. With the timeless allure of Barbie, intellectual depth of Oppenheimer, dystopian drama, or sweet escapades, we were all on the edge of our seats with popcorn in hand. Each film of this past year contributed to the never-ending storytelling of Hollywood and showcased the talent of the actors, directors, artists, and everyone behind the scenes. As we look forward to new and upcoming movies in 2024, these titles are a testament to the continuing creativity and innovation in the world of cinema.
