Even though Spring is here and Summer is on its way, I’d like to recall some notable instants from my personal favorite (and everyone’s favorite) season: Awards Season! Here’s a recap of the 2020 Golden Globes and Oscars ceremonies: all the results you want to know and the most memorable moments.
First up, the Golden Globes. With controversial comedian Ricky Gervais as host, the Golden Globes were sure to be an entertaining evening— and they certainly delivered! Awards for Best Picture went to critically acclaimed 1917 and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, while the South Korean thriller/comedy Parasite won Best Foreign Picture. Alongside Joaquin Phoenix (recipient of the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture: Drama for Joker), Taron Egerton won best actor in a Motion Picture: Musical or Comedy while playing Elton John in the musical biopic, Rocketman… But, to be honest, Roman Griffin Davis (the incredible 13-year-old star of Jojo Rabbit) got snubbed; he was my pick. Anyway, this year’s ceremony also included Awkwafina’s groundbreaking accomplishment: she became the first woman of Asian descent to win Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her performance in The Farewell— easily the most exciting moment of the 2020 Golden Globes.
Moving on to the 2020 Oscars… Among fellow winners such as Laura Dern and Brad Pitt, Bong Joon Ho received the Oscar for Directing for Parasite— a notable triumph over widely celebrated nominees Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorcese. If you recall Mrs. Landis’s lovely email back in February about Black History Month, she shared with us the short film, Hair Love, about an African American father learning how to do his daughter’s hair. This beautiful story received the Oscar for Short Film (Animated). Another poignant film, Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl), won the Oscar for Documentary (Short Subject), telling the story of young girls in war-torn Kabul who learn and grow together through skateboarding. My final note on the Oscars is from the Red Carpet: Natalie Portman arrived in a gorgeous Dior gown underneath a cape embroidered the last names of Hollywood’s female directors that were snubbed of Oscar nominations… certainly a look and a statement to remember!
